About the Santa María Education Center
The Santa María Education Center is located in Pachacutec, a shantytown of migrant workers outside of Lima in Ventanilla District of Callao Province, Peru. More than 96% of its nearly 140,000 families live in extreme poverty, without access to adequate water, sanitation, electricity, or other basic necessities. Children in particular suffer from malnutrition and disease, and lack quality education.
Coprodeli sought to address these problems by building the Santa María Education Center to provide quality education and nutrition to children in Pachacutec. The Center was started in July 2008 currently serves 100 students at the pre-K and primary levels, and is in the process of expanding to include a secondary school as well.
Coprodeli 2009 Spring Volunteer Group Project
In March 2009, Coprodeli expanded the Santa María Education Center with five new classrooms to accommodate a secondary school wing. However, the classrooms are not yet functional because they lack equipment. This project will provide tables, chairs, whiteboards and bookshelves for these five recently constructed classrooms, allowing the secondary school at the Santa Maria Education Center to open and operate.
Impact
Once the classrooms are equipped, 175 more students will be able to enroll in standards 7–11. The students will attend class, receive a nutritious meal every day and be provided with physical and cultural activities. In addition, classroom equipment will be purchased from local Pachacutec businesses, helping to stimulate the local economy.
Join the Coprodeli Volunteer Group and partner with Pachacutec to give 175 students the opportunity to attend secondary school and finish their education
