Meet Subtanjalla, an urban community of 16,900 on the outskirts of Ica City, Peru. In 2007, almost 90% of the region of Ica was destroyed by an earthquake. Since then, Coprodeli, 1Well’s field partner in Peru, has been working to help fix the damage, focusing on one particularly vulnerable segment of the population: children. Read more
Since the earthquake, which destroyed 120 education centers, children have been going to class in regions close by. But the schools have been forced to run in half-day shifts to fit everyone in, giving the children more idle time, when they are most at risk for drug use or gang violence. As a result, Coprodeli has built a Centro Atención Externa (CAE)— or Youth Outreach Center— to help provide for the most basic needs of these children and their families, including education, healthcare, and child development services.
You can partner with Subtanjalla to provide what children need most: nutrition. This project will create a cafeteria for the CAE at $5,602, but the benefits are priceless. As Alycia Ebbinghaus, Program Director of Coprodeli USA explained, ”nutrition, especially at an early age, is vital to development. Being able to provide children nutrition in school allows them the chance to have proper physical development.” Not only that, but children who aren’t hungry are better able to concentrate in class, allowing them to stay in school for longer and ultimately find better jobs. You can become the Citizen Philanthropist for the Subtanjalla CAE Cafeteria Project. In doing so, you’ll help these children reach their full potential.
