About the Santa María Education Center
The Santa María Education Center is located in Pachacutec, a shantytown of migrant workers outside of Lima in Ventanilla District of Callao Province, Peru. More than 96% of its nearly 140,000 families live in extreme poverty, without access to adequate water, sanitation, electricity, or other basic necessities. Children in particular suffer from malnutrition and disease, and lack quality education. The poor education system in the area limits the future of Pachacutec and acts as an obstacle in combating the consequences of poverty.
Coprodeli sought to address these problems by building the Santa María Education Center to provide quality education and nutrition to children in Pachacutec. The Center was started in July 2008 and currently serves 100 students at the pre-K and primary levels, and is in the process of expanding to include a secondary school as well. The Sta. María Center has made education accessible to a greater number of students in the Pachacutec community while promoting the importance of school attendance and community development.
The Boyanci Project
The Boyanci Volunteer Group's project will support the completion of a community library in the Sta. María Education Center, including finishing floors, windows, painting, reinforcing concrete, and other materials necessary to open the facility as a multipurpose center for study and learning. The Center's community library will offer quality services to approximately 300 students during the school day, including books, librarians, research tools, and programming on various topics such as the environment, human rights, and gender equality. In addition, the Sta. María library will also provide resources to more than 1,500 community members through book loans, adult literacy courses, parent resource workshops, and community events.
Join the Boyanci Group and partner with Pachacutec to the Santa María library, and enrich the learning environment for the entire community.
