PROJECT UPDATES

SEPTEMBER 2009
Learn about how Dana, Jill, and Robin raised more than $3,000 to complete their Devki Well Repair project in the 1Well Spotlight!

AUGUST 2009
Funds for the Devki Well Repair Project has just been wired to the Self Employed Women's Association (SEWA), 1Well's field partner in India. Local engineers will begin construction to deepen, reinforce, and recharge the well in mid–late September, after the monsoon season. Construction of the project will also provide members of the Devki community with masonry and other jobs. Stay tuned for more updates from the field!

JUNE 2009
Congrats to 1Well Citizen Philanthropists Dana, Jill and Robin!

Their happy hour event on June 18th in New York City was an enormous success. With the support of friends, families, and colleagues, they raised $3,149.09, surpassing their goal. Dana, Jill, and Robin have decided to full fund an additional biogas plant in Sonalnagar Village, Gujarat, India in addition to supporting 1Well operations with the excess raised.

From Dana, Jill, and Robin

It amazed us to learn the great lengths that the women of Devki must go to in order to provide their village with something as basic as water. We were inspired to help and hope that you will join us in the effort to bring Devki families reliable and safe access to clean drinking water. Donations of any size are very welcome. We greatly appreciate your support.

Also, save the date: We are throwing a happy hour fundraiser on Thursday, June 18th. Location details to follow shortly. We hope to see you there!

Thanks,
Dana, Robin & Jill

About Devki Village
Devki Village is a small agricultural community in a semi-arid region of Rajasthan, India. In recent years, increasingly severe droughts have made the scarcity of water a significant problem for families in Devki. Water tables are falling and more than 10 small wells in and surrounding Devki are now dry. Harvest seasons have been shorter, and farmers are experiencing heavy crop failure, forcing community members to seek alternative means of livelihood.

This project will repair and deepen the primary well in Devki, allowing the well to recharge with ground water. A deeper well will also allow for more water to be stored during the monsoon season and saved for use during the dry season. This will give families better access to drinking and cleaning water and alleviate the strain put on existing water resources. A parapet safety barrier and a pulley system will also be constructed in order to ensure women and children are able to safely collect water from the well.

Project Impact

More than 20 families will have access to a cleaner, more reliable water supply, and the amount of time and frequency women will need to travel for water will be reduced. Women can save about 5 hours a day of traveling long distances to obtain water, and can use the time saved earn extra income for their families.

Availability of water for drinking and washing will dramatically improve village health and sanitation. Additionally, available water can be used for irrigation for winter crop cultivations. Increased agricultural production will provide the community with grain and fodder for cattle, resulting in increased income and food security.
