February 2009

from Kate & John

Dear LT Friends,
Thanks so much for your generous donations and participation in our 1Well Chili Fest at Lake Katherine last October. Dan Morrison, the director of 1Well, was delighted by the turnout and enjoyed speaking to all of us about how a simple dream is becoming a reality.

Meanwhile, good things continue to happen.

Dan traveled to Kapurashi Village on his latest trip to India in November (yes, he returned safely from Mumbai about 12 hours before the bombings) to bring greetings from all of you and to see the progress of the projects you made happen. Believe it or not, the projects are almost completed. Before the Chili Fest on October 5th, half of the money collected had been sent to SEWA for beginning the needed project work in the village. It was a memorable morning in mid-November when the phone rang very early at both our houses and voices were excitedly chanting “Namaste” and “LT” as Dan tried to pass the phone to village leaders and laborers alike who in Hindu and hesitant English phrases continually thanked us for the wonderful changes that had come to their village.

Thank you so much for making a difference in the lives of these villagers—for being a global neighbor.

Great News! LT English chair Toby Casella and instructor Ann Dudek contacted Dan about forging a writing relationship between students at LT and the villagers. Dan and SEWA (Self Employed Women’s Association) are working out the technological and language difficulties, a promising opportunity for students to connect with others half a world away. Also the LT Social Action Club under the sponsorship of Nicole Galliuchio and Ann Dudek organized a Pastapalooza event to benefit 1Wel1 on December 10th. Dan and John were present to answer questions and help eat the pasta. The students raised $500 towards a project to help Indian orphans. It is terrific to have so many segments of the LT population assist in the 1Well effort.

Thank you again for all your good wishes and continued interest in how the project will affect our friends in Kaparashi. We wish you all good things this holiday season and we hope you will help us continue to assist Kapurashi Village in the new year.

Sincerely,
Kate & John

About Kate & John

We (Kate & John) are retired teachers from Lyons Township High School in LaGrange, IL, who after being involved with 1Well's Vachharajpur well project, decided to bring together our friends and former colleagues to partner with Kapurashi, a remote village in northwestern India. One hundred families contributing $100 can empower a village of 1,400 people to increase their productivity and improve their standard of living.

We are "partnering" with Kapurashi, not simply donating money and leaving. After these initial projects are complete, we will be working with the village and the Self Employed Women’s Association (SEWA; www.sewa.org), our on-the-ground field partner, to identify the next level projects that will support village entrepreneurs. As basic services are provided, people will be spending less time on water collection, lesser walking of great distances to relieve themselves, and reduced threat of unsafe drinking conditions. For children, this additional time becomes increased attendance in classrooms. For adults, it means more productive time in the fields, or the ability to begin enterprises, like making soap and incense, weaving, performing embroidery, and trading or selling goods. We hope this is the beginning of a beautiful and economically fulfilling friendship.

In effort to support 1Well, we will be hosting a Silent Auction with various gifts donated by our friends and family. To learn more and participate, please visit LT 1WELL Silent Auction. ALL proceeds of the Silent Auction go to benefit 1Well operational funds.

Project Description

Agriculture is the major occupation of the villagers in Kapurashi. The region is dry and semi-arid and agriculture is essentially rain fed. In order to have access to water, the communities need to develop water sources in the village itself. Furthermore, sanitation is a major problem. There are no toilets, which means villagers have to walk relatively long distances to relieve themselves in the open. This lack of basic sanitation facilities results in a dirty and unhygienic village, vastly increasing the possibility of a debilitating outbreak of disease. To avert this potential disaster, Kapurashi needs toilets in the village and a general cleaning of the village.

To improve Kapurashi’s agricultural output, soak pits are needed to store wastewater, which will increase the moisture in the soil and recharge the land's productive capacity. Drinking water pits for farm animals are also needed so that the animals do not share water facilities with the villagers, an unsanitary practice that also increases the likelihood of disease.

The projects we will be supporting include:

• Well (repair): 1

• Roof rainwater harvesting tanks: 10

• Sanitation facilities:10

• General village cleaning: 1

• Farm pond repairing: 1

• Farm pond building: 3

• Agricultural trainings : 2

• Soak pits: 20

Join Kate, John and their friends and colleagues and partner with Kapurashi village to provide the basic health, sanitation, and agricultural needs required to support a healthy and positive community.
